What’s covered by Domestic Travel Insurance?
Cancellation and delays
Cancellation fees and lost deposits on pre-paid travel, accommodation, meals, etc.; and travel delay expenses. (Excluding epidemics, pandemics and infectious disease outbreaks.)
Rental vehicle insurance excess
Any hire-car insurance excess you become liable to pay as a result of the car being damaged or stolen, up to $4,000.
Your liability for accidentally injuring someone else or damaging or losing someone else’s property during your trip, up to $1.5 million.
Upgrade your cover
For an additional premium, you can add one or both of the following optional extras to your policy:
Snow Sports Cover
Covers claims relating to skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating and more. Includes cover for the cost of snow sports equipment, lift passes and ski packs. (Excludes emergency medical and hospital expenses.)
Halve your excess from the standard $200 to $100; or choose to have no excess.
How do I add these optional extras to my policy?
You can add one or both of these optional extras when you get a quote and buy a policy.
If you’ve already bought a policy, you can add Snow Sports Cover only. To do this, call us on 1800 444 424 or log into your online account and edit your policy — before you leave on your trip and within 14 days of the purchase date.
Medical and hospital expenses
In contrast to our international travel insurance policies, our Domestic policy does not cover emergency medical and hospital expenses.
That’s because these expenses are claimable in Australia from Medicare and/or your private health fund.

Frequently asked questions
How long can I get travel insurance for?
You can get a Budget Direct single-trip policy for up to 12 months if you’re aged 65 or under; or up to 90 days if you’re aged between 66 and 100.
An Annual Multi-Trip policy is effective for 12 months, however each trip must last 30 days or less (if you plan on taking a longer trip, you’ll need to purchase another, single-trip policy).
Can I get travel insurance if I have a pre-existing medical condition?
Budget Direct travel insurance covers 27 pre-existing health conditions.
If your pre-existing medical condition is not one we cover, you can still be covered for claims (including overseas medical and hospital expenses) not related to your condition.
Do the benefit amount limits apply to each family member (or travelling party member) or to the family (or travelling party) as a whole?
The benefit amount limits are the most we’ll pay each insured person per trip.
For example, if a family of five has Comprehensive cover and all five of them have their luggage stolen, we’ll pay them up to $7,500 each (minus their excesses of $200 each.)
