No matter how young and healthy someone is, they can be struck down by unforeseen critical illnesses and injuries, like cancer and severe burns.

Our Trauma Cover provides you with a financial safety net in the event you’re diagnosed with a specific illness or injury that makes it difficult or impossible for you to continue to work and earn an income.

On acceptance of any claim, we’d pay you a lump sum benefit of up to $500,000. This could allow you to take extended time off work to recover while still meeting your financial obligations, including the cost of ongoing rehabilitation, debt repayments and living expenses.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between trauma insurance and health insurance?

Health insurance covers the costs of some hospital expenses and medical treatment, but generally not additional expenses you may incur as a result of serious illness or injury like cancer or burns. These additional expenses can include rehabilitation equipment, ongoing nursing care, home and vehicle modifications and living costs. In short, health insurance alone may not be enough to protect you financially if you suffer a serious illness or injury.

Is there a waiting period?

Yes – you can only claim for trauma events that occur or become apparent more than 90 days after:

  • your application is accepted
  • any non-indexation increase in your cover (but only in respect of the increase)
  • your policy is reinstated (after lapsing).

Can I claim on my trauma cover even if it looks like I’ll eventually be able to return to work?

Yes – trauma cover benefits are paid regardless of your ability to go back to work.

I’ve got income protection insurance – do I need trauma cover?

That’s for you to decide. Like trauma cover, income protection insurance covers the costs of serious injuries and illnesses. However, income protection benefits may not be sufficient to cover the long-term costs of your recovery from a trauma event – not to mention all your debts and everyday expenses.

Can’t I get trauma cover through my superannuation fund?

Since 1 July 2014 super funds have been prohibited from offering trauma cover to members. Unless you arranged trauma cover through your fund before that date, you won’t be able to get it.
