How to Maximise Your Work Leave in 2027

Christmas Day, Boxing Day & New Year’s Day

If you’re planning an interstate trip to Western Australia with the family this Christmas, consider Domestic Travel Insurance. Depending on your policy, cover may be available for luggage and personal effects claims, rental vehicle excess costs, and a range of adventure activities.

We also recommend checking if you’re covered for roadside assistance in case your rental vehicle battery goes flat, you run out of fuel, or your car breaks down while heading to some of Western Australia’s remote coastal locations.

Australia Day

Typically, on Australia Day, shops in the Perth metropolitan area are open from 8am–6pm, but stores outside of the metropolitan area are likely to be closed. ^[1] We recommend checking online in advance to find your local store’s operating hours.

Easter Holidays

If you’re heading out of the city for Easter, the Bussell Highway is expected to be one of the most popular exit routes for families in WA. ^[2] In recent years, there have been an estimated 30,000 vehicles on the roads each day over Easter. This amount of traffic, coupled with the possibility of unsealed roads, roaming wildlife and extreme weather, including storms and bushfires, ^[3] can lead to unsafe road conditions. So, it may be worthwhile to plan your route accordingly and know the safest places to stop in the region.

To make sure you’re well prepared, check your Policy Manager to read your policy terms, make a claim or update your car insurance details. If you’re planning to travel interstate and hire a rental car, our Budget Direct Domestic Travel Insurance can help cover the lower of the excess or the repair costs if the vehicle becomes damaged or stolen during your trip.

How to Maximise Your Weekends in 2027

Labour Day

Every Labour Day weekend in Western Australia brings the Collie Labour Day Festival, filled with activities, entertainment and attractions. You can find street markets, climbing walls, live performances and the option to camp at the nearby Stockton Lake. ^[4]

Anzac Day

With Anzac Day falling on a Monday in 2027, you can turn a long weekend into five days off. If you’re looking to spend your time shopping during the public holiday, keep in mind that opening hours can vary across stores, with Westfield centres and chains such as Big W, IKEA and Kmart likely to be closed for the entire day. ^[5]

Western Australia Day

If you’re looking for something to do over the Western Australia Day long weekend, why not explore the best of what WA has to offer? You could spend time heading on a road trip to the Coral Coast, where white beaches meet the outback desert and the classic winery region of Margaret River. ^[6]

If you’re travelling far and wide to see some of WA’s sweeping destinations, make sure you’re covered for Roadside Assistance in case you have an emergency in a remote area.

King’s Birthday

To avoid a clash with Western Australia Day, the King’s Birthday is typically held in September instead. Unlike Good Friday and Christmas Day, most stores, including pubs, cafes and restaurants, are usually open on this public holiday. However, schools and universities are typically closed. ^[7] We recommend checking your local stores’ opening hours and public transport timetables, as these may differ on the King’s Birthday public holiday.
