Hail Hero Saves the Day

  • Award winning technology saves motorists from hail damage to their vehicles in a wild week of weather.

It has been a wild week of weather in the South-East of Queensland and New South Wales with low cost insurer Budget Direct lodging hundreds of motor and home claims with an estimated cost in the millions over the past five days.

But in some good news, Budget Direct’s Hail Hero SMS service has been saving the day for customers, delivering over 80,000 text messages across the storm affected regions since Friday.

Hail Hero took two years of research and development to create. The service offers customers a text message warning, which alerts them to impending damaging hail, giving them at least 10 minutes notice to move their vehicles.

The technology was named this year by Canstar as one of the 8 top products showing innovation in Australia.

Budget Direct customers like Pat from Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast are crediting the service with saving their car.

“When the text came through I didn’t believe hail was on the way, the skies above didn’t look too threatening. The storm just moved so quickly, thankfully I got that text as we had hail the size of tennis balls. Hail Hero saved my car,” says Patricia.  

On Friday Hail Hero sent out 16,700 texts, Saturday 37,700 messages went out to customers, Sunday 3,700, and Monday 24,000 alerts went out to car owners in the storm affected regions of Queensland and New South Wales.

Budget Direct team members are currently establishing assessing and repair centres for customers from Coffs Harbour, Bangalow, through to the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
