Upgrade your cover
For an additional premium, you can customise your travel insurance policy by adding one or more of the following optional extras:
Additional Specified Items Cover
Increase your level of cover for your valuables – including cameras, smartphones, portable electronic equipment, and jewellery – by specifying, or listing, them in your policy (Comprehensive and Annual Multi-Trip policies only).
Excess reduction or waiver
Halve your excess from the standard $200 to $100; or get it waived and pay no excess.
How do I add these optional extras to my policy?
You can add one or more of these optional extras when you get a quote and buy a policy.
If you've already purchased one, you can add Snow Sports Cover and/or Additional Specified Items Cover to your policy, either by contacting us or logging into your online account and editing your policy – before you depart on your trip and no later than 14 days after your purchase date (the cooling-off period).
Overseas medical and emergency assistance
With Budget Direct travel insurance, you get access to a global assistance network of medical practitioners and emergency assistance providers 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
These include multilingual medical and travel specialists, including 500 doctors in 34 countries, who can provide help if you experience a medical emergency while overseas; and, if necessary, coordinate your evacuation or repatriation.

Frequently asked questions
When should I get cover for my trip?
As soon as you’ve booked and paid for some or all of your trip. That way, if you’re forced to cancel your trip, you’ll be covered (conditions apply to cancellations – please see the PDS for full details).
If you’re a frequent traveller with an annual travel insurance policy, you’re covered for an unlimited number of overseas trips of up to 30 days each in a 12-month period.
Before each trip, you won’t need to let us know where you’re going – unless your destination is not one you selected originally, in which case you would need to contact us to get it added to your policy.
What documents can I expect to receive to confirm I’m insured?
Immediately after you’ve paid for your policy, we’ll email you:
- your certificate of insurance, which will show your selected level of cover and travel destination/s
- a product disclosure statement, which tells you everything you need to know about the product
- a link to register an online account, so you can manage your travel insurance policy at your convenience, 24/7.

What’s not covered?
We do not cover certain situations and circumstances, including:
- failure to get relevant innoculations or vaccinations
- errors or omissions in your travel bookings
- incidents involving drugs or alcohol
- loss of luggage and personal effects left unattended
- countries listed as ‘Do not travel’ on the federal government’s Smartraveller website
- certain pre-existing medical conditions
- medical expenses incurred in Australia (which are already covered by Medicare or your private health insurer).
Do you cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Yes – we cover 27 pre-existing medical conditions. If your pre-existing medical condition is not covered, rest assured that you would still be covered for any unforeseen medical expenses not related to your condition.
Do you provide cover for accidental death and disability?
Three of our five policies – Comprehensive, Annual Multi-Trip, and Domestic – provide a specified amount of cover for death and disability, while our Essential policy covers you for disability only. For more details, please read the product disclosure statement.
Note that travel insurance is not a substitute for life insurance, which can pay you or your beneficiaries a lump sum to meet your needs in the event you die or suffer a specified trauma or a total and permanent disability.
