The city that’s always buzzing

Like the Murray Head song says, “One night in Bangkok and the world’s your oyster.” Thailand’s capital is renowned for its nightlife, and the only hard part about making the most of it is deciding where to begin.

The tourist strip on Khao San Road will keep you fully occupied for as long as you can stay awake and keep going. This vibrant street features endless clothing and jewellery markets, cheap eats including classic Pad Thai, massage parlours (not the seedy kind) and more street vendors and foreign backpackers than you can shake a stick at.

If you like peace and quiet, this isn’t the place for you, but if you want to experience what the Bangkok night scene is all about, this is as good a place as any.

You’ll also find lots of local tour offices along Khao San if you want to organise further travels around Bangkok and beyond.

If you’ve come to Thailand to find bargains, there are a number of Bangkok night markets that will keep you shopping for hours – and many stay open past midnight.

So many night markets to choose from

If you’ve come to Thailand to find bargains, there are a number of Bangkok night markets that will keep you shopping for hours – and many stay open past midnight.

One of the most well known is the Patpong Night Market, which is open from 6pm to 1am every night. This chaotic collection of family-run vendor stalls, go-go dancing outlets, drinking establishments and super-affordable eating options is noisy, bustling and a full-on assault on all your senses.

If you’re after a more relaxed bohemian vibe, check out the JJ Green Night Market, which operates Thursday-Sunday from 5pm to 2am. Here you’ll find retro items like old vinyl records, antiques, collectables and plenty of second-hand clothing at rock-bottom prices.

Meal with a view

Grabbing a quick, tasty $1 noodle dish from a street market stall is one way to keep your stomach happy, but for a more upmarket experience, visit one of Bangkok’s many rooftop restaurants and bars. Enjoy stunning panoramas and quiet surrounds while you sip wine and ponder your choice of entrees many storeys above the crowds and traffic below.

Dress codes are a little stricter than down on the street, so substitute real shoes for flip-flops.

The Octave Rooftop Bar and Lounge is located at Marriot Hotel 57 in Sukhumvit and has uninterrupted skyline views that will take your breath away. Another good choice is the Cloud 47 Rooftop Bar at the United Centre Building on Silom Road.

Many ‘bars with a view’ in Bangkok can be quite pricey, but here the costs for meals and drinks are a tad more reasonable. The ambience is stylish and the views are incredible in all directions. It’s open from 5pm until midnight, every night except Sunday.

Dance ‘til you drop

If your idea of fun is bopping away to bass-heavy electronic music in the midst of multi-coloured lighting, huge LED wall screens and party-goers of every nationality, you’ll love Bangkok’s club scene. It’s pretty hard to keep up with the latest and greatest venues here because new ones are popping up every month, but one thing is certain – you’ll never run out of choices.

Many of the trendier clubs are located in popular nightlife districts including Khao San Road, Silom, Ploenchit, Ratchada, Sukhumvit and Thonglor.

If your musical tastes run in a different direction, you’ll find that Bangkok has a surprisingly active jazz scene as well.

One of the most relaxing ways to sample Bangkok after dark is by indulging in a dinner cruise along the tranquil Chao Phraya River.

Dinner cruise along the river

One of the most relaxing ways to sample Bangkok after dark is by indulging in a dinner cruise along the tranquil Chao Phraya River. There are many companies to choose from, including some with incredibly luxurious vessels and correspondingly lofty prices.

For a more traditional experience, try the Wanfah Dinner Cruise onboard an open-air teak barge that’s beautifully fitted out and serves authentic Thai cuisine. During the cruise you’ll pass attractions like the Royal Grand Palace, Emerald Buddha Temple, Rama VIII Bridge, Phra Sumen Fort and Temple of Dawn.

There are no tacky stage shows here: instead you’ll be treated to classical Thai music and traditional cultural performances.

The Wanfah departs from the River City Shopping Complex and offers a more authentic experience than some of the larger cruises. It’s not a tiny boat though – it seats 120 diners.
