New figures released by low cost car insurance provider Budget Direct, show increasing peak hour traffic congestion in major Australian cities is taking its toll on motorists, making them twice as likely to have an accident during this period.*
Budget Direct Car Insurance spokesperson Richelle Ward said internal claims data for a two year period were analysed to determine the most likely time of the day, and day of the week, car drivers became involved in traffic accidents in Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.
"The data revealed that accidents are more likely to occur on a Friday and during afternoon peak hour than any other day or time of the week.
The greater number of cars on the road at these times and erratic driving behaviour caused by peak hour frustration were the most likely reasons for the increase in accidents during this timeframe,” Ms Ward said.
“When you consider the pressures and distractions today’s motorists are dealing with behind the wheel, coupled with the stress of peak hour traffic congestion, it’s not surprising that the frequency of accidents is higher during these times.
“Impatience can often get the better of people during peak hour congestion, causing some drivers to make reckless decisions and create dangerous situations for everyone on our roads,” she said.
“Even minor accidents could be both physically and mentally distressing for families and loved ones, and that people should never ‘drop their guards’ but display the utmost care at all times.
“Car drivers need to increase their awareness and abide by normal driving rules during heavy road congestion which means they should concentrate, slow down, keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and pay attention to other drivers on the road,” Ms Ward said.
*Peak hour defined as 6am-9am and 4pm-7pm, Monday-Friday
