Eighty percent of drivers deal with queue jumpers

August 2009

With motorists experiencing more road works, delays and congestion then ever before, they’re still sharing the love with 79% in Sydney, 81% in Brisbane and 76% in Melbourne saying they don’t mind queue jumpers if they are not in a hurry, according to new figures released by low cost car insurance provider Budget Direct.

But not everyone welcomes queue jumpers with open arms with an average of 9% saying they beep the horn, a further 2% will offer the one finger salute to vent their frustration and a bold 9% admit to speeding up to close the gap.

With the help of Brisbane-based market researcher footprints, Budget Direct asked motorists to fess up on frustrations like queue jumpers, dint and runs and if they would stop to help people with car trouble - and the results are not what you’d expect.

While over 50% of drivers in each of the states claim to have never hit another car - an impressive 42% (on average) said they have but were sure to leave their contact details and less than 10% admit to a dint and run when it was only minor damage.

Budget Direct spokeswomen Richelle Ward said the results were positive when you consider the state of our roads while under construction and it was encouraging to see that the Australian way of honesty with a “she’ll be right mate” attitude is still prevalent today.

Motorists were cautious about stopping to help a driver in trouble with 17% in Sydney, 20% in Brisbane and 21% in Melbourne saying they would certainly stop if they saw a female on her own, while a further average of 20% admitted they would not stop at night, which is to be expected, Ms Ward said.

Brisbane drivers were not to be out done in the singing stakes with 23% admitting to being caught singing loudly to a favourite song, compared to 19% in Sydney and 18% in Melbourne.
