The Cannex Car Insurance Report

We invited Cannex, one of Australia's leading researchers of retail finance information, to carry out a quote price study. Cannex developed standardised profiles of average Australian, good drivers, using 10 average vehicles, to compare 2890 online quotes offered by 20 companies between 27-31 March 2006. Drivers under 25 and over 65 and the Northern Territory were excluded from the study. Cannex found that Budget Direct offered the best quote price for comprehensive car insurance over 90% of the time.

About the Cannex report

In preparing their report, Cannex developed standardised customer profiles for average Australian drivers, both male and female, based on statistics obtained from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the various state transport authorities. The profiles were based around what Cannex determined were 'average Australian, good drivers'. Ten average cars were chosen, based on their size class as outlined by FCAI. Data from carsales.com.au encompassing most popular used cars and average age of available cars was combined to identify the cars selected. Ten postcodes were picked from around Australia, focusing on metropolitan areas with high usage of cars and low usage of public transport. Cannex then compared the prices offered by 20 leading providers of car insurance between 27 and 31 March 2006. Cannex used each company's publicly available on-line quoting system to obtain and compare quotes prices offered by the various companies. In each case, a standard set of predetermined answers were used to complete the quotes. Drivers in the Northern Territory were excluded from the comparison, as were drivers under the age of 25 and over the age of 65. In total 2890 quotes were completed for the report.
