MALE DRIVERS ARE MORE COURTEOUS TOWARDS LEARNER DRIVERS

A study by leading low cost motor vehicle insurance provider, Budget Direct, has revealed that less than one in five female drivers (18%) would slow down for a learner driver and let them have right of way.

The surprising survey results also showed that Brisbane drivers (22%) were less likely than their Melbourne counterparts (25%) to slow down for a learner, yet more likely than Sydney motorists (18%).

Budget Direct communications spokesperson, Richelle Ward, said according to the survey, motorists over the age of 65 were most likely to be considerate of learners with 38 per cent stating they would give way to a learner driver.

“These results were not a surprise as generally people in this age group are in less of a rush to get places than younger people.

“The statistics support this view with motorists in the 25 to 29 age group emerging as the least likely to slow down and let a learner have right of way,” she said.

Ms Ward said the results revealed that more than two thirds (70%) of Brisbane motorists said that when they see a learner driver they remember where these drivers are on the road and keep and eye on them, and nine per cent of motorists said they change lanes to get away from learner drivers.

Budget Direct statistics state that drivers under the age of 20 are twice as likely to have a motor vehicle claim as a 35 year old and even at 24 years of age a driver is still 40 per cent more likely to have a motor vehicle claim than someone who is 35.

“I would encourage all motorists to be considerate of learner drivers and help reduce the risk of an accident occurring by giving way, being patient and generally leading by example.

“Drivers would be wise to remember that they were once learner drivers themselves and recall how difficult learning to drive can be,” Ms Ward said.

TIPS FOR MOTORISTS

  • Try not to beep the horn unless necessary
  • Be patient and courteous
  • Don’t tailgate
  • Don’t drive dangerously when overtaking
  • Keep an eye on learner drivers, as they can be unpredictable
